I’ve flown Tokyo to Washington DC many times, 14 hours on a 777, but not on AA. It is a rough flight, but you’ll manage.
If you are a tall or big person you should try to get a “Economy Plus” seat, which are generally $100 more (one way) and you can upgrade at the airport, but the number is limited so try to check in early. The Plus seats are a few inches bigger in each direction and it can make a huge difference if you are big. Otherwise they are the same as regular Economy seats (same food, service, etc.).
It is very rare to have a power outlet in Economy. Usually they are only in Business and First class. If your laptop is 13″ it will barely fit on the tray. Any bigger and you will have a hard time using it.

i flew on american airlines from tokyo to houston – houston to toronto on dec 24th. i originally was booked with cathay pacific from toronto to vancouver however the flight was cancelled and i needed to get home asap. cathay pacific offered a hotel room for the night and a seat on a flight the following day though i refused, and asked them to find me a flight leaving that day to get me home. they came up with a flight operated by american airlines…i took it out of desperation. it was at best fine. got me home in time for christmas though cant even compare to cathay pacific, japan airlines, singapore air etc…yes we arrived safely which is the most important thing but in flight service compared to many asian airlines is terrible. no frills, compared to economy on japan airlines for example, amercian airlines is like a greyhound bus with wings..

Amenity kits, good food, legs and arm space are we’re talking about economy class here????? Thats business/first class service… Any flight over 5 hours in coach is going to be rough, why because the flight is near 10 hours and you’re sitting in a cramped seat in economy.
Laptops can generally be used when electronics are allowed to be turned on. Blankets and pillows are generally free. http://www.airliners.net/photo/American-…
Power supply depends on the seat, reference seat guru if you haven’t already selected your seat:http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/America…
Your standard economy you would expect for any airline, cram as many seats as possible to make money.
